Data as of · regenerated from the live database on every download

CMS publishes Hospital Compare as a set of separate files, with facility names in capitals and the quality comparisons split away from the facility records. These downloads are the joined version: one row per hospital, names cased as a person would write them, ratings and comparisons in the same file. Free to reuse under CC0, no attribution required and appreciated anyway.

Hospital ratings and comparisons

One row per hospital CMS tracks: name, city, state, county, ZIP, facility type, ownership, emergency services, birthing-friendly flag, the CMS Overall Star Rating where one exists, and the mortality, safety and readmission comparison counts. The rating column is empty for the 2,250 hospitals CMS publishes no overall rating for, which is not a zero and not a low score.

State and territory summary

One row per state, the District of Columbia and each US territory CMS covers: hospitals tracked, hospitals carrying a star rating, the average rating among rated hospitals, five-star and one-star counts, emergency-service and birthing-friendly counts. This is the same aggregate the state pages render.

How to read these files

Each file opens with comment lines beginning #, naming the source, the license and the traps worth knowing before anyone computes a share from the data. Most spreadsheet and dataframe readers skip them on request; the header row is the last of them.

The one that catches people: an empty star-rating cell means CMS published no Overall Star Rating for that hospital, not a bad one. Only 3,182 of 5,432 hospitals carry a rating, so a share computed against every row understates the real rate by roughly half. Which hospitals are missing, and why it is not random, is set out on our statistics page.

Figures move when CMS publishes new files and our pipeline ingests them, so a download is a snapshot: cite it with the as-of date above. Processing corrections are logged in the data changelog, and the derivation of every field is in the methodology.
